Muscle Function and Feeling Great

The Function of Your Muscles Effects How You Feel.

Your muscles are what hold your body together, allow you to move and help your body function effectively. When our muscles “activate” they contract either pulling the limb in a direction or working along other muscles to stabilise a joint. When the muscle relaxes it allows for the muscles opposing them to either contract and move the limb in a different direction or to return the limb to a neutral position. When muscles don’t work in synergy then it can have an effect on the balance and movement of the body causing postural deviations, pain, inflexibility and fatigue.

It Is All About Balancing The Body

My approach to a person’s pain, postural issues or inflexibilty is to of course look at the Structural Balance. With the foundations of Kinesiology lying in Chiropractic, it is understood that in order for the body to function properly all areas need to be in alignment and working synergystically. Through a technique called muscle testing, I am able to look at the activation of the different muscles throughout the body and around an areas of concern.

When a muscle does not activate effectively, it is said to be under stress. The cause of this could be a number of different things and is often unique to the individual. We may find that it is caused by emotional stress, past present or even sometimes future. It could be nutritional or environmental stress. It may be caused by an injury or structural imbalance. It could be an imbalance in the subtle energetic systems of the body.

Whatever the cause, when we feel out of balance, tight, sore, it has a huge impact on how we view the world and feel in our skin.

However,

When everything is in balance, we feel no inhibition. Our bodies can move freely, we can stand up tall, we have energy and vitality and this expands out into our actions and feelings we are experiencing in life.

So, What Sorts of Stress Impact Our Muscles?

Physical stress

Over exertion.

When we overuse a particular muscle or set of muscles, they can either stop working effectively or become much stronger than their opposing muscles. This can have an impact on other muscles in the body causing postural issues, pain or injuries.

Injury

When we have an injury of a muscle, the body needs time to repair the muscle. any many situations other areas of the body will take over the job in the meantime which can often put strain on these areas. in some situations, the muscle doesn’t fully return to proper or optimal functioning. either because the areas of the body wont allow it, or it has a memory that needs to be released. Kinesiology has techniques to help reinstate proper activation so all muscle can return to their optimal function

Nutritional Stress

Our muscles need nutrients to function properly. Without the required nutrients the muscles will fatigue faster or stop activating properly altogether. There are also nutrients and specific foods that appear to increase the energy and facilitation of certain muscles. We learn ore about this in the International Certificate in Kinesiology

Toxic overload.

When the body is full of toxins it activates both the immune and stress responses in the body. This puts undue stress on all areas of the body including the muscles, weakening the entire system.

Emotional Stress.

The connection between our mind and our body is far more powerful than we have ever thought. Our thoughts, feelings, subconscious and conscious beliefs all have an impact at different levels of our body and how it functions.

Sometimes its things like our fight or flight responses in our bodies can be activated by a thought, or a belief. This diverts oxygen and nutrients away from our muscles, and reduces the muscles ability to function effectively.

In TCM, Certain emotions have a relationship with certain muscles in the body and therefore may be activated when experiencing certain things. This is evident very much in our faces. When you are happy. The muscles in your face change from your resting facial expression. when we are sad, different muscles are activated.

In Kinesiology, we always look at any emotional component when working with any aspect of the body. This is because we find that there are often imprints of emotions or experiences that we have had in the past. Our bodies have recorded these in our system to further keep us safe from danger.

Environment.

One of the things we don’t often take into consideration is the environment and it’s effect on our muscle response. We have already spoken about toxins, and the environment is where a lot of these could be coming from. Seasonal things may also have an impact on our bodies ability to function properly. But, one of the things that i find the most interesting is Electromagnetic frequencies. These things could be our phones, wifi technology, the electricity around our house. These things all have an effect on our own subtle energies of our bodies and that can have an impact the function of our muscles.

Our body does have an incredible ability to be able to adjust itself to cope with this stress. However, we are not yet aware with how much this is impacting our systems as a whole.

Energy Systems.

Although we are not capable of fully understanding these with our current technology, We are beginning to accept that there is a link between energy and matter with quantum physics. Energy Systems are often described by the auras, the chakras and the meridians.

Traditional Chinese Medicine is the other foundational modality of Kinesiology. Therefore, we predominantly focus on The Theory of the meridians when working with the muscle balance. In Kinesiology, every muscle in your body has a related meridian. When there is an imbalance in your meridian, then your muscle function is effected. There are a number of reflex points, and techniques to help reinstate the balance in the energy systems so your muscles and your entire system can work more optimally.

What Can You Do?

  • Reduce your emotional and mental stress.
  • Have a healthy diet, high in wholefoods.
  • Support your bodies detoxification
  • Use your body evenly and regularly.
  • Reduce environmental impacts such as use of technology, toxic environments, and what you might put on your skin.

What can I do?

  • Identify and help you to change, emotional stresses, thoughts, feelings and beliefs that are negatively impacting your muscle function.
  • Balance your meridian System
  • Identify nutritional supports, dietary or lifystyle changes that will support you as an individual.
  • Use techniques to reinstate the balance and synergystic activation of your muscles.
  • Activate your bodies innate healing abilities.

How?

A kinesiologists tool kit is huge and varied. There are a number of different streams out there and what I teach and practice here, Professional Kinesiology Practice (PKP),  is one of them. In PKP, we have elements of Chiropractice, Osteopathy, Naturopathy, Life Coaching, NLP, Traditional Chinese Medicine and more…

Through the muscle testing, we essentially identify what technique or support from our range of techniques is going to help the muscle to reinstate its proper activation. It could be something simple, it may be a couple of things, but it is always holistic and specific to the individual.
