Kinesiology For Headaches & Migraines

Headaches & Migraines. They are a pain in the head. Literally. They can range from slightly annoying to incredibly debilitating. This is how kinesiology can help

Types of headaches you can have:

Tension Headaches

These are the most common type of headaches. They are often a result of structural imbalances like poor posture, gait imbalances or injury. They often occur when people are experiencing stress.

Cluster Headaches

These are extremely painful headaches (but luckily relatively rare). They are usually strictly one- sided and attacks in cyclical pattern and bouts.  Doctors aren’t really sure what causes these to occur but it may appear that things like smell, alcohol, and certian medications may trigger these types of headaches.

Migraine headaches

Migraine is a neurological disorder that can be very distressing and disabling. Typically it is a one-sided throbbing or pulsating headache that is at least moderately intense and can be aggravated by physical activity. It is very often associated with nausea and vomiting, as well as increased sensitivity to light, sound and even some types of smell.

Allergy or sinus headaches

Usually local to the sinuses, and accompanied by a runny nose and sore eyes. They are often seasonal due to allergens or infection.

hypertension headaches

Usually a tight band feeling around your head. A precipitating factor might be a sudden increase in blood pressure.

Other Types Of Headaches

Hormone headaches

Severe headaches that feel like migraines. These are usually related to a females cycles or due to starting contraceptive pills.

Caffeine headaches

Either triggered by the consumption of caffeine or the withdraw from caffeine. It is a headache that begins behind the eyes and moves up into the middle of the head.

Exertion headaches

A headache that has an onset during or after physical exertion. It is caused by Increased blood pressure in the blood vessels of the brain, which is called venous pressure. It usually dissapates after the exertions stops. However, for a few people it can last days.

Eye-strain Headaches

If your eyes are having to work hard to focus, you may find that there is a dull pain and heavy feeling around the eyes.

How does kinesiology help your headache and migraine?

When you look at the different types of headaches, sometimes the causes are apparent. Other times some deeper research needs to be undertaken by a medical professional to come to the determining factor.

Kinesiology is not used to treat diagnose or prescribe for known health issues, like Headaches and Migraines. Therefore, I wont be able to tell you, what kind of headache you have and the medical reason as to why. However, the muscle testing that I use in Kinesiology, can direct us to contributing factors and the resources the body needs to be in better balance.

A Holistic Approach

It doesnt matter what kind of headache you are experiencing, a holistic approach is always taken. This means I take into consideration all aspects of a person. Structural, biochemical (hormones, detoxification, nutrition) or emotional aspects of your wellbeing. In TCM and Kinesiology all of these areas have an impact on each other. for example, When you are stressed, stress hormones are sent into the body to prepare the body for fight or flight. These hormones may use up the resources the body needs to repair muscles and ligaments in the body. When an injury or over us of a muscle or ligament occurs the muscle may switch off to protect itself. Other muscles in the area may then take up the slack, but cause structural imbalances which lead to poor posture and headaches.

Therefore, we need to address not only the stress, but also the resources your body is getting while also re- adjusting the structure.

Energy Systems

In Kinesiology we predominantly work with the meridian system from Traditional Chinese Medicine Theory.  In TCM, pain is the result of an excess of energy in a meridian. There are 14 meridians, each are named after and relate to certain organs and functions in the body. Each of these meridians have a specific relationships to each other. Either taking from, giving to and controlling energy of another meridian. The excess of energy in one (or more) meridian leads to a deficiencies in others. Whether its an excess or deficiency, the imbalance in the meridian may cause its related parts of the body to not function best. This may lead to physical symptoms relating to those areas. eg. hormone imbalances, allergies, metabolism issues, detoxification imbalances, blood pressure, etc.

Structure

Each meridian also relate to a number of muscles in the body. Meaning an imbalance in a meridian may show improper functioning in all the muscles on that meridian. An imbalance in muscle function may be the cause of postural deviations and pain. Therefore by bringing balance to the different energetic systems within the body, it supports the body in all areas to function more effectively.  With a balanced meridian system – no excess of energies will be present, the processes and structure of the body are balanced and pain will be able to dissipate

When structure is the obvious cause of imbalance and pain,  I will assess all the muscles, tendons and ligaments related to that area. I can assess each area to determine whether it is functioning effectively or not. If it is not, then I will use whatever reflex point, or other technique to reinstate it’s function. Not only do each of the parts of the body need to be working on their own. but, they need to be able to work synergystically together. Sometimes when injury occurs, another muscle takes up the slack and then starts turning other ones off. there are many reasons why together muscles might be reacting to each other, and Kinesiology has some great technqiues to help this. whether the imbalance is in your feet hip back or head, By aligning the structure of the body, it will eliminate the tension in the face, head neck and jaw that might be adding to your headache.

Mind

Our meridian system is also greatly effected and related to our emotional systems as well. In all of my sessions the goal is to direct your attention towards what the headache is stopping you from doing, rather than “how you are being effected”. Essentially, you want to focus on what you are wanting to do in your life with the intention of heading in that direction (not that you can’t). If you consciously become familiar with how you want your life to change, the muscle testing will then show us the blockages and direct us towards the things that will help you achieve your goals.  The muscle testing allows us to also identify emotions and memories being held by your pain and techniques needed to diffuse the power that emotion has over you. This is why an emotional component is identified with each balance. This allows us to clear out old patterns and beliefs, so you can repattern your mind and your body.

Nutrition, rest, excercise etc.

Although Kinesiologists dont diagnose or prescribe, Sometimes nutritional or excercise suggestions may arise through the muscle testing. Food and excercise provide the body with resources it needs to be able to function optimally. Perhaps your diet is missing some essentials specific to your needs. maybe the kind of excercise you need to do is different from what you are doing. perhaps there are foods you are consuming that are triggering your headaches or allergies. If this is the case, it is most likely to show up in a balance.
